Honouring God is at the heart of true worship, yet in today’s church culture, the approach to worship, including how we dress, has shifted. In the effort to make church more accessible and inclusive, many have embraced a more casual approach. While this may seem welcoming, it raises an important question: Are we still honouring God in how we approach Him?

The Bible challenges us with this question from Malachi 1:

“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?” (Malachi 1:6, NKJV).

This is a sobering reminder to examine our actions and our motives in worship. Are we giving God the honour He deserves, or have we reduced our worship to convenience and personal preference?

The Lessons from Malachi 1: Honouring God in Worship

1. The Context of Malachi 1

The prophet Malachi spoke to a people whose worship had become complacent. Though they continued to offer sacrifices, their offerings were defiled, and their hearts were far from God. This dishonoured His name and diminished His glory among the nations.

  • Offering Defiled Sacrifices:

“You offer defiled food on My altar, but say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’” (Malachi 1:7, NKJV).

Instead of bringing their best, the people brought blind, lame, and sick animals—something they would never offer to a governor or king.

  • A Lack of Reverence:

“You also say, ‘Oh, what a weariness!’ And you sneer at it.” (Malachi 1:13, NKJV).

Worship became a burden, and their offerings reflected a lack of respect for God’s majesty.

  • God’s Response:

“For I am a great King,” says the Lord of hosts, “and My name is to be feared among the nations.” (Malachi 1:14, NKJV).

God reminded the people of His greatness and called them to restore the honour due to Him.

2. Honouring God Requires Giving Our Best

The Israelites dishonoured God by offering sacrifices that cost them nothing, revealing their lack of reverence for Him. In contrast, King David exemplified true honour when he said:

“I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” (2 Samuel 24:24, NKJV).

When we prepare for worship, we must ask ourselves:

Am I giving God my best—whether in time, effort, or preparation?

Is what I wear and how I approach worship reflecting my honour for Him?

My Testimony: Casual or Formal?

I personally prefer to dress casually. It’s comfortable and feels more natural to me. However, if I were meeting a president, a prime minister, or another high-ranking official, I would dress up. Why? Because the significance of the occasion demands it.

When I think about worshipping God, the King of Kings, I realize it’s not about my preferences. It’s about presenting myself in a way that reflects the reverence He deserves. The clothes I choose should reflect the reverence and honour in my heart. The key is the heart and attitude behind my preparation.

Balancing Accessibility and Reverence

1. Avoiding Legalism

We must avoid creating rigid dress codes or rules that might alienate people. Honouring God is about the heart, not only just external appearances.

2. A Practical Gauge

A helpful way to evaluate is to ask:

“Would I wear this to meet the president or prime minister?”

If not, consider whether it’s appropriate for worshipping God. Dressing for church doesn’t mean being extravagant, but it does mean being intentional.

3. The Motive Matters Most

Ultimately, it’s not about the clothes themselves but about the attitude behind them. Are we preparing thoughtfully for worship, or are we approaching God with indifference?

The Heart of Worship: Where Is My Honour?

Honouring God goes beyond attire—it’s about the way we live, prepare, and approach Him. Just as the Israelites dishonoured God by offering defiled sacrifices, we dishonour Him when we approach worship casually or carelessly.

“Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come before Him. Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!” (1 Chronicles 16:29, NKJV).

When we gather for worship, whether casually or formally dressed, let us ensure that our hearts are fully engaged, prepared, and reverent.

Practical Steps to Honour God in Worship

  1. Intentional Preparation: Reflect on your heart and attitude before worship.
  2. Sacrifice Over Convenience: Offer God your best—not just what is easy or comfortable
  3. Examine Your Motives: Consider whether your choices—whether in dress or preparation—reflect reverence for God.
  4. Strive for Balance: Avoid extremes of overindulgence or carelessness, focusing instead on the motive behind your actions.

Honouring God in All We Do

The question from Malachi remains relevant today:

“If I am a Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?” (Malachi 1:6, NKJV).

Honouring God is not about following a checklist or adhering to specific rules. It’s about living and worshipping in a way that reflects His majesty and holiness. Whether through our attire, preparation, or daily actions, let us give Him the glory He deserves.

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31, NKJV).

May our worship—both on Sundays and throughout the week—be marked by intentionality, sacrifice, and a heart that says:

“I will not offer to the Lord my God that which costs me nothing.” (2 Samuel 24:24, NKJV).

Let us always ensure that our hearts reflect the honour and reverence we want to show to God—even in the clothes we choose to wear.
