If God is one, why didn’t He just say it clearly?

That’s a common question. Why does understanding His nature require deep study, reflection, and faith? Why not make it so simple that no one could possibly misunderstand?

But what if I told you… God DID say it plainly?

God Declared His Oneness Repeatedly

Throughout the Bible, God has made His oneness abundantly clear. The issue is not a lack of clarity, but rather a failure to accept what has already been stated.

The Old Testament Proclaims It Clearly:

  • Deuteronomy 6:4“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!”
  • Isaiah 43:10-11“Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior.”
  • Isaiah 44:6“I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God.”
  • Isaiah 45:5-6“I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God besides Me… That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other.”

The New Testament Reaffirms It:

Mark 12:29“The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.’”

  • John 10:30“I and My Father are one.”
  • 1 Timothy 2:5“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”
  • James 2:19“You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!”

So, why is there confusion? The real issue is not that God didn’t say it—it’s that people have added unnecessary layers of complexity to what He has already revealed.

Why Do People Struggle With This Truth?

If the Bible clearly states that God is one, why do many still misunderstand?

The answer lies in human reasoning, tradition, and philosophy. Instead of taking God’s Word at face value, people try to interpret it through human wisdom—which often leads to distortion.

Paul warned about this very thing:

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.”

Colossians 2:8

This is precisely what happened in church history. The early church believed in the absolute oneness of God, but over time, Greek philosophy and theological speculation crept in, attempting to explain God’s nature in ways the Bible never intended. The result? The doctrine of the Trinity—a concept developed centuries after Christ and never taught by the apostles.

The Problem Isn’t Clarity—It’s Unwillingness

Many do not receive this truth because they do not want to. Instead of submitting to scripture, they cling to traditions and church creeds. Jesus rebuked this mindset:

“You have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.”Matthew 15:6

So, the real question isn’t, “Why didn’t God say it plainly?” but rather, “Why don’t people believe what He has already said?”

Why Doesn’t God Make It Even Clearer?

This brings us back to our original question. If God is one, why doesn’t He make it so obvious that no one could possibly misunderstand?

The answer is faith.

God doesn’t force revelation on anyone—He requires us to seek Him with a sincere heart.

“Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Hebrews 11:6

If everything were immediately obvious, there would be no pursuit, no hunger, no seeking. But Jesus said:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”Matthew 5:6

Truth is not hidden from us—it is hidden for us. God desires relationship, not just recognition. He reveals Himself to those who truly seek Him.

The Evidence of the Holy Spirit—Speaking in Tongues

God not only declared His oneness plainly in scripture, but He also provided a supernatural sign of His presence in a believer’s life—the infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would come, and when it did, there would be undeniable evidence:

“These signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.”Mark 16:17

When the Holy Spirit was first poured out on the Day of Pentecost, what was the evidence?

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”Acts 2:4

This pattern continued throughout the early church:

Acts 10:44-46 – Cornelius and his household received the Holy Spirit, and Peter knew it because “they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.”

Acts 19:1-6 – Paul met disciples who had been baptized in John’s baptism. When they were baptized in Jesus’ name and received the Holy Spirit, “they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”

The evidence of speaking in tongues is God’s way of making His presence undeniable. It is not a theological debate—it is a supernatural reality.

Final Thoughts: Are You Willing to Believe?

God has spoken plainly about His oneness. The real issue is whether people are willing to accept His Word as it is, or if they will allow human tradition to override divine revelation.

And to remove all doubt, He has given undeniable evidence—the infilling of the Holy Spirit with the sign of speaking in tongues.

So the next time someone asks,

“If God is one, why doesn’t He just say it plainly?”

You can confidently respond:

“He did. And if you want further proof, receive His Spirit. The evidence will speak for itself.”

A Challenge for You

If you have ever struggled with understanding God’s nature, take this as an opportunity to seek Him in prayer and in the Word.

Ask Yourself:

✅ Have I received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Bible describes?

✅ Have I been baptized in Jesus’ name according to the apostolic pattern?

✅ Am I willing to lay aside tradition and trust the Word of God alone?

If you seek Him, you will find Him. His Word is clear—He is one, and His Spirit is still being poured out today!

???? Need guidance? Read Acts 2, Acts 10, and Acts 19.
